A large sports center, comprising three sports halls and service facilities, is being built on challenging foundation conditions on a former marshland in Espoo’s Laajalahti. The halls are steel-framed with pitched roofs. The ground floor structure consists of hollow-core slabs with a mechanically ventilated crawl space. The single-story buildings are founded on reinforced concrete and steel piles. Once completed in 2025, the halls will host sports such as tennis, padel, and floorball.
Nodetec Oy is responsible for the structural, precast element, and steel component design. Key features of the project include the extensive hall structures and demanding foundation conditions. The marshland does not provide any horizontal support for the structures, requiring all loads to be transferred to bedrock using long vertical and inclined piles.
