The Orton Hospital property comprises buildings originally constructed between 1941 and 1943, with various extensions and additions built over the decades. Currently, the facility accommodates several healthcare and service providers. The property also includes a rock-excavated parking facility built alongside a 1980s extension.

In 2021, the design phase for a new service center began. The project consists of a new building on a vacant lot, the renovation of the 1980s wing, and the construction of an extension adjacent to the renovated section. An older block housing a pool area was fully demolished to make way for the extension. Nodetec handled the structural design of the new and renovated sections and was responsible for the element design of the new and extended parts.

Renovation Highlights

  • 1980s Wing: The renovation involved a complete overhaul of the three lowest floors, including lightweight structures and technical systems.
  • Structural Modifications: Major changes to the building’s frame included new openings in exterior and interior walls and floor slabs. A large auditorium was divided into two floors with a new intermediate floor supported by the old frame and new columns and foundations.
  • Operational Constraints: Technical systems serving other parts of the facility passed through the renovated section and needed to remain operational throughout the project, adding complexity to the design and construction phases.

New Construction Highlights

  • Structural Frame: The new building’s frame is primarily composed of precast reinforced concrete elements. The design prioritized efficient use of materials and ease of assembly, ensuring repetitive and simple installation processes.
  • Flexibility: Structural flexibility was a key design goal to support the building’s lifecycle, achieving an adaptable framework for future use.
  • Foundation Challenges: The new section was built atop the existing rock-excavated parking facility, requiring specific considerations for foundations, rock reinforcement, and excavation. Parking ventilation shafts and access routes were preserved and integrated into the new structure.

Continued Involvement

The property at Tenholantie 10 is continually maintained and updated. Nodetec remains involved in planning long-term repairs (PTS). In 2023, Nodetec managed the structural design for a comprehensive repair project of the parking facility’s concrete structures.
