Kouvola, Myllykoski

New Construction / Renovation
Scope: 674 m²
Architect: Arkkitehtitoimisto Opus Oy
Responsible Structural Designer: Valtteri Vaarsalo
Structural Design Project Manager: Valtteri Vaarsalo
Complexity: Class V

The project involved expanding a church originally built in 1936 with separate spaces across three new nave-like sections. Nodetec was responsible for the structural design.

Key Project Highlights:

  • Integration with Existing Structure: Special attention was given to the connections between the new and existing buildings. The monument-like architecture and unique shape of the original church posed significant design challenges, requiring carefully planned solutions.
  • Structural Design: The new structure features a combined timber and brick frame. It consists of two structural expansion joint blocks, separating the old church from the new section. The design process required close collaboration and a solution-oriented approach, particularly with the architect, to address the unique architectural and structural challenges.
  • Architectural Features: The vaulted roof design with a high ridge and elevated interior ceiling presented specific technical and structural complexities. Particular focus was placed on the technical and physical connections between the building blocks, ensuring durability and functionality.

The result is a cohesive and functional addition that provides a comfortable and safe environment for users, while respecting the historical significance and architectural integrity of the original structure.
